The rebuilding the Children's Clubhouse in Willard Park has been a long-standing goal of the Willard Neighborhood Association. We are committed to seeing that the City develops and builds a new clubhouse that is child-friendly in form and function; in fact, we think the children who regularly play in the park should be part of the City's design committee. Please join us to realize the goal of a child-friendly park clubhouse for our children.

Back in 2016, Berkeley Voters passed Measure T1 which authorized the City to sell bonds to repair or rebuild Berkeley's aging infrastructure - this included that of our city parks. Prior to the T1 Measure, the agreement between the City and our neighborhood organizations was that a modest child-friendly new clubhouse would be built in Willard Park. The imprint of this new clubhouse would not be radically different from the existing one.

In 2022, we find that the DPRW wants to build a Community Center instead of a modest child-friendly clubhouse. This Community Center, combined with the many other structures of the DPRW's plan, would significantly infringe upon the open lawn space of Willard Park.
The existing clubhouse is under 600 sq. ft; the DPRW's latest plan shows a building of 4,100 sq. ft.
In addition, the interior design includes three conference rooms. Are these traditionally part of a children's clubhouse? What do children want and need inside their clubhouse?
There is also concern that the exterior design does not bear resemblance to a children's clubhouse.
The current plan of the DPRW, which you can access below, also reveals some of the additional new structures. See p. 27 , "Possible Locations for Future Community Space in the Park."
To see the City's latest plan:
Join us to make sure that Willard Park keeps its open lawn space, our children receive a child-friendly clubhouse and that the community can have a say about what happens to Willard Park.
For many years, the City's parking program for The Elmwood and many other neighborhoods, has consisted of residential parking permits and two hour free parking for visitors. Presently, the City is trying to eliminate that parking program in many neighborhoods of South Berkeley. Join us to ensure that our existing parking program remains intact.
For decades, many groups and individuals from all over Berkeley would swim at Willard Pool. A few years ago, the pool was closed. Please help us convince the City to restore and reopen Willard Pool, a much needed community resource.
